As we become increasingly involved in technology,

There are few experiences in life in which my
physical and psychological abilities are as sharply defined as they
are during marathon training and racing...The training and racing
experiences have shown me sides of myself that I never knew
existed. I've found perseverance, an ability to focus,
stubbornness, compulsiveness, bravery, organization, a sense of
humor, and a capacity for unbridled joy.

18、 Wrapped in our silver capes and adorned with
medals and salt streaked caps as our crowns, we were princesses of
pain, loving every minute of it. Isn't it the weirdest
thing?something so damn hard, so humbling, so fickle, so painful,
is also the thing we seek on purpose? Sitting there, surrounded by
my friends and cracking up, I had a flash of myself at age
70.
Kristin

Most people never get there. They're afraid or
unwilling to demand enough of themselves and take the easy road,
the path of least resistance. But struggling and suffering, as I
now saw it, were the essence of a life worth living. If you're not
pushing yourself beyond the comfort zone, if you're not constantly
demanding more from yourself—expanding and learning as you
go—you're choosing a numb existence. You're denying yourself an

I actually think being a more balanced person
makes a healthier, happier, and thus faster person. The question I
try and ask myself when I consider whether or not to train more is
what is my body craving and what is my body ready to absorb?
Sometimes pushing harder is not the answer. It takes self control,
confidence, and intuition to know when to train and when to rest,
but when in question error on the side of being over
rested.

It is great therapy. Running has led me through
some of my most challenging life experiences — most recently, the
loss of my mother. When everything else seemed like it was falling
apart, my running was there to keep me sane and make me take care
of myself.

Sometimes I play the grateful game - notice the
beautiful scenery and thank the universe that I am healthy enough
to get up and run today without issue. Not everyone has that
luxury.

Like writing, running is so much about mind over
matter. There are times when you have to override the discomfort
and keep pushing. That capacity to endure and then prevail is just
amazing.

We ran seven miles one chilly, sunny morning this
week and it felt so good to run, like having coffee with a friend
you haven't seen in a while. I missed running while I rested and
restored, but our time apart was good too.

shoulders—women fall into my arms crying. They're weeping for joy
because running has changed their lives. They feel they can do
anything.
