饮湖上初晴后雨
苏轼
水光潋滟晴方好,
山色空蒙雨亦奇。
欲把西湖比西子,
浓妆淡抹总相宜。
蔡廷干译:
Rain in the West Lake
by Su shi
The lake first sparkled in the sun’s bright dazzling sheen,
Then wonder-making showers the verdant hills would screen.
For varied charms the West Lake well may I comare
To Xizi, who, adorned or not, alike was fair.
林语堂译:
The light of water sparkles on a sunny day;
And misty mountains lend excitement to the rain.
I like to compare the West Lake to Miss West,
Pretty in gay dress, and pretty in simple again.
许渊冲译:
The brimming waves delight the eyes on sunny days;
The dimming hills present rare views in rainy haze.
West Lake may be compared to Beauty of the West,
Whether she is richly adorned or plainly dressed.
雨打萍译:
My impressions of the West Lake’s “rain or shine”
Su Shi
The West Lake’s ripples sparkle and twinkle if it’s sunny;
The hill sights look pretty misty if rainy or cloudy.
How similar the lake looks like an ancient beauty
whether she dressed up carelessly or carefully.

Drinking on West Lake
In the Sunshine first and then in the rain
by Su shi
West Lake is wonderful with its waves dazzling in the sun,
The lake is also marvelous with the smoky hills in the rain.
West Lake could be compared with the famous Beauty Xizi,
For she, adorned or not, is always the most beautiful lady.
