A Verse by Li Mi-an
(A Half and Half Song)
When half my floating life passed, I undo a knot -
- “Half”, such a useful word, it deeply means a lot.
Halfway in life, this “half” tells me to stress out really not,
For another wonderful half-life I’ve still got.
To dwell halfway to town and halfway to country,
This half side lie hills, that half rills, fields in between,
Hours, half for farms, half for books or keeping house clean,
Half of me a scholar, half be a philistine.
Furniture, half of them durable, half be nice,
Abode, half gracefully furnished, half just so so,
Garments, half of them newly made, and half made years ago,
As for food, half will be rich, half just simple though.
Servants, half of them diligent, half not so much,
My wife may be half and half, very plain but able.
My heart feels like half a Buddha, half a fay and angel,
Good, if my name unknown to half of some people.
As for myself, half should belong to the heavens,
And another half with this mortal world will be.
My concerns, half will be pledged to my dear posterity,
And half behooves me to deem how God would judge me.
Better to be half drunk when it comes to drink wine,
Much prettier when flowers open to the halfway.
Sails, just hoisted half-mast, could escape a capsizing day,
With half loose reins the running horses will obey.
He who gains less than half may feel very unfair,
Yet when he gets more than half, hassle may haunt him.
A life will be half and half, sweet and bitter, bright and dim,
So he who craves half would always enjoy a hymn.
