与俄苏文学不同，英国作家大段大段的景物描写较为少见，而且英国作家的景物描写显得重，稍拙，难以刺激起朗诵和背诵的欲望，而狄更斯Bleak House（破败的屋子）里的这段文字，不一定优美，却相当轻灵。
众所周知，伦敦是赫赫有名的雾都，可是伦敦的雾与巴黎柏林罗马纽约的雾有哪些不同，我们亦很“雾”！
首先，用up和down这对反义词，让我们感受到浓雾的威力，巨大、庞大、超重，如一个泰坦巨人。由于river是泛指，而非确指，不知道究竟是哪条河流，还是让人感到稍微空泛了一点点，接着，用埃塞克斯郡和肯特郡，确指，把空濛的雾实体化！
随后，用一个creep，不着痕迹地转换到轻盈空灵。我们常说清水出芙蓉，天然去雕饰，羚羊挂角，无迹可寻，这是一个典范的例子。
creep这个单词，在歌曲the sound of silence里出现，他的内涵是如梦如幻地轻盈。
雾，creep后，从一个庞大的巨人，一下子成了一片毫无重量的羽毛，却又如此自然，毫无生硬之感，真是大匠运斤，羚羊挂角,无迹可寻。
雾的动态美立时曝露无遗。
第二层，狄更斯采用伦敦常见的各类船、大船、小船、驳船,以及船员、养老院、老人、烟斗、小学徒、桥上的人等意象，进一步把雾具体化，形象化，突出本段主旨Fog everywhere.
而修饰词wrathful与cruelly恰到好处的使用，渲染出雾不仅无所不在，而且杀伤力极强，那切肤之感迎面扑来。
这段文字篇幅虽小，却能极好体现出作家的功力，先以大斤劈出一个巨人的雏形，随后，精心雕琢巨人的眼睛鼻子嘴巴眉毛手脚……
